SUMMARY:Music Worcester Presents: Vijay Gupta\, Violinist in Recital
DESCRIPTION:“When the Violin\, the title of a poem by the Sufi mystic Hafiz on the power of forgiveness and new identities\, will present works by JS Bach and Reena Esmail in collaboration with dance artist and choreographer Yamini Kalluri. Opening with Bach’s 2nd Partita in D minor with its concluding “Ciacona” – considered an Everest for violinists – the program will present a new choreography of the preceding baroque dance movements of Bach’s Partita. Kalluri is trained as a classical Indian dancer as well as in the Martha Graham school of avant-garde ballet. \nFollowing the D minor Partita comes Esmail’s When The Violin\, originally written for choir and cello\, and a companion work to the 16th century Spanish composer Victoria’s O Vos Omnes. Esmail writes: “The text of O Vos Omnes is asking\, simply\, to be seen in a moment of sorrow — to be beheld through suffering and darkness. And Hafiz’s text responds in such a beautiful way — it moves through that darkness and begins to let those very first slivers of light in.” \nConcluding the program is Bach’s equally monumental 3rd Sonata in C major\, which is believed to have been written for the occasion of Pentecost. The Sonata’s 2nd movement\, a revolutionary 3- part fugue written for a four-stringed violin\, sets a Lutheran hymn “Komm\, Heiliger Geist” (Come\, Holy Spirit)\, and famously reverses the hymn subject in a feat of contrapuntal mastery.” \n  \n–Vijay Gupta\, Music Worcester Artist-In-Residence 2023

Please join us.  \nWriting prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop via a shared Google Document\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. The link to the Google Document can be found in the confirmation email when you register.  \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.

The 18-member\, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics\, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland\, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone. Through performances\, community engagement and arts education\, the Company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all. \nMusic Worcester is thrilled to have joined six other arts presenters from across the United States as co-commissioners of Sounds of Hazel\, a brand new work by Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrating the life and legacy of jazz legend Hazel Scott. \nCurated with input from Scott’s son Adam Clayton Powell III and Scott biographer Karen Chilton\, The Hazel Scott Celebration is intended to introduce a new generation of music fans to this great American’s life and work and to help restore her rightful legacy as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. SUMMARY:Basics of Hand Sewing
DESCRIPTION:Learn and practice some basic hand stitches that you can use to stitch fabric together\, mend or even embellish and embroider. We will work on a small project using the stitches you learn. The pace of the class will depend on the experience level/ interest of the people attending. This class is intended to teach functional stitched but we may expand into some decorative stitches as time allows. \nFabric\, needles and an assortment of threads will be available for class use but feel free to bring in any fabrics and/or threads that you want to try using. \nProject Takeaway \nStudent will take home a set of needles\, stitched samples\, and a small project (if time allows).

DESCRIPTION:It is a great pleasure to present to you the release of my first Latin Jazz album and production “El tiempo pasa”. Latin jazz is a genre that merges jazz with Latin American rhythms. The main influences found in this production are Afro-Caribbean jazz\, rhythmically based on Cuba\, rhythms from the Dominican Republic\, Afro-Brazilian jazz\, samba\, and bossa nova. My Latin Jazz invites its audiences to dance and enliven the spirit! My name is Eduardo Ortiz\, I am a professional musician born in the Dominican Republic\, with more than 50 years of experience in the industry and it is an honor to share the release of this album with the Worcester community.  \nEs un placer poder presentarles mi primer disco y producción de Latín Jazz “”El tiempo pasa”.\nEl Latin Jazz es un género que combina el Jazz con ritmos de Latinoamérica. SUMMARY:Halalisa Singers Perform Concert for the Earth
DESCRIPTION: Boston-based world music vocal ensemble Halalisa Singers presents “Concert for the Earth\,” a performance honoring Earth Day\, featuring the “Missa Gaia (Earth Mass)\,” on Saturday\, April 29\, 8 pm\, at First Unitarian Church\, 90 Main Street\, Worcester\, and Sunday\, April 30\, 4 pm\, at First Parish of Arlington\, 630 Massachusetts Avenue\, Arlington. Special guests include composer\, singer\, and guitarist Jim Scott\, who joins the 30-voice choir as performer and soloist in his own works including “Missa Gaia” and “We Are the Earth\,” and acclaimed saxophonist/vocalist Stan Strickland. Led by Artistic Director Mary Cunningham\, the ensemble is also joined by pianist Trevor Berens\, percussionists Bertram Lehmann and Fabio Pirozzolo\, bassist Rick McLaughlin\, and local branch members of the national climate movement organization Mothers Out Front. The mix of Gregorian chant and church hymns\, Latin American and African rhythms\, jazz and gospel ballads with the song of wolf and whale mixed in is quite a musical experience!” \n  \nThe program’s second half features Kim Andre Arnesen’s “Song for Justice” from his “Beatitudes for a Wounded World\,” Gwyneth Walker’s call for universal love in “Tree of Peace\,” Moses Hogan’s soulful arrangement of “Wade in the Water” with Strickland as vocal soloist\, and Diana Saez’s flowing “Yemaya\,” as well as songs by Jim Scott including “Harmony\,” “Common Ground\,” and “We Are the Earth.” The chorus also sings climate movement anthems “The Tide Is Rising” by Rabbi Shoshana Friedman and Yotam Schachter\, and “Do It Now: Sing for the Climate\,” calling us to build a better future right now with Mothers Out Front\, who add their singing voices and share information on how audience members can support climate justice. “We’re excited to include works by contemporary composers who call us to action\,” says Cunningham. “The collaboration with Mothers Out Front offers opportunities to get involved and make a difference. DESCRIPTION:April is PMDD awareness month and to raise awareness for this disease\, join Clark University's student run and led club: Menstrual Equity Alliance for a night of conversation and education! We will be discussing endometriosis\, PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder\, and PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome and other chronic pain and mental health issues that affect the endocrine and immune system that impact menstruation\, fertility\, and one's quality of life. Though these illnesses all function differently and are classified differently from each other\, they are often categorized as "women's diseases" or diseases that only impact those affected on their periods when this is far from the truth. Whether you experience chronic pain or chronic mental health issues\, know someone who does\, or these terms are entirely new to you– all are welcome to this conversation and educational event. \nTeens and adults welcome.
