SUMMARY:Jason Fiering: Turned Down - Public Gallery Hours
DESCRIPTION:Public gallery hours for Jason Fiering: Turned Down \nFree \nAbout this exhibition: \nThese precise\, minimalist assemblies offer multiple interpretations of the bed\, a site associated with rest\, refuge\, intimacy\, illness\, and violence alike. Fiering reflects the ambiguities of that site in the constructions themselves. The motif of a single fold\, the “turn down\,” bends the picture plane and emphasizes the ambiguities of front and back\, image and object\, and painting and sculpture. Fiering’s meticulous construction\, uncompromising hard edges\, and mathematical proportions invite us to consider a familiar form anew\, and challenge our desires for security and certainty. \nIn 2021\, Jason Fiering was named ArtsWorcester’s Present Tense Prize Winner. This prize recognizes an artist whose work exemplifies new practices\, artistic risk-taking\, and excellence in execution. Prize winners are rewarded with a solo exhibition and a $1\,000 honorarium. \n  \nThe Present Tense Prize is generously supported by Marlene and David Persky and the Artist Prize Fund. \nArtsWorcester exhibits in the Davis Art Gallery take place courtesy of Davis Publications. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJason Fiering is a painter working in Boston and New Bedford\, Massachusetts. His artwork encompasses themes of visual perception and introspection. Among his career highlights are a commission for the city of Graz\, Austria\, solo shows at Artspace New Haven\, the Chazan Gallery in Providence\, and the Solo Show Award from Boston’s Bromfield Gallery.  He has been an artist in residence at Ox-Bow in Michigan\, I-Park in Connecticut\, and Arts Letters and Numbers in New York. He has exhibited in numerous group shows regionally. Fiering earned a Master’s Degree in physics and continues a parallel career as a research scientist in medical equipment.

SUMMARY:The Secret Door - Worcester's Mind Reading Experience
DESCRIPTION:Secret Doorway is an astonishing evening of mind-reading with comedian\, hypnotist and sleight-of-hand artist Peter Gross. Peter uses no special equipment or double-jointed assistants to create his confounding stunts\, just the quick hands of a card shark\, the improvisational skills of a stand-up\, and a con man’s command of human psychology. Peter reveals thoughts\, predicts what you’ll do next and acts as a human lie detector.  The showtakes you on a highly interactive\, intellectual roller-coaster ride of “impossible outcomes.”  Peter has performed at the White House\, The Kennedy Center\, Canada’s National Theater\, and on National Television. He is recognized as a master of misdirection and mentalism and Secret Doorway has been described as “the perfect date night”.  Peter is thrilled to bring the show to Worcester. Once the home of four competing Vaudeville theaters and dozens of speakeasies\, Worcester has a long history with charlatans and other professional liars. \n  \nThe Secret Doorway will only admit 90 people per performance\, so each person will have a unique and up close experience.

SUMMARY:Cyro Baptista and the Banquet of Spirits: Sounds of Community
DESCRIPTION:“I don’t even think of him as a percussionist\, because he is so much his own personality that it almost transcends any percussion instrument he could be playing.” – Yo-Yo Ma \nOne of the premiere percussionists on the planet\, Cyro Baptista leads his winsome quartet on a virtuosic trek through myriad musics of the world. Washed out surf rock splashes\, blazing hardbop solos\, breathtaking West African harping\, exquisite Brazilian rhythms — the sounds all coalesce into a carnivalesque stew of joy and irreverence as these four astonishing players draw on sounds and instruments from around the globe to create utterly unique combinations. \nA veteran of stage and studio work with the likes of Paul Simon\, Herbie Hancock\, Yo-Yo Ma\, Trey Anastasio (of Phish)\, John Zorn\, Laurie Anderson\, Cassandra Wilson\, Sting\, the New York Philharmonic\, the Kennedy Center Orchestra\, Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, and many others\, Baptista is one of the most sought-after players around. His visionary approach to music-making stresses inclusion\, community and pushing past boundaries\, while remaining refreshingly fun and totally accessible. \nThroughout the week\, Baptista will be leading workshops with a variety of community groups and participants\, using everyday objects as well as traditional instruments at the Jean McDonough Arts Center in downtown Worcester. The sessions will culminate in a concert on Sunday\, April 3rd featuring Baptista & the Banquet of the Spirits with community participation. \nThis residency is supported by grants from the Worcester Arts Council\, New England Foundation for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. \n
