SUMMARY:The Kid Brother: Silent film accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ
DESCRIPTION:With Clark Wilson on the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ \nThe Kid Brother is a 1927 American comedy classic silent film starring Harold Lloyd. It was successful and popular upon release and today is considered by critics and fans to be one of Lloyd's best films\, integrating elements of comedy\, romance\, drama and character development. Its storyline is an homage to a 1921 film called “Tol'able David\,” although it is essentially a re-make of a little-known 1924 Hal Roach feature\, “The White Sheep\,” starring Glenn Tryon. Watching a silent film with live music creates a unique experience that you wouldn’t get watching a modern film at the movie theater. It is both visually and audially stunning\, creating an immersive once-in-a-lifetime event for filmgoers. \nAll tickets are $20. Seating is general admission. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more\, children and students. Contact the box office at 877.571.SHOW (7469) for more information.

SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Writing Workshop with Susan Roney-O’Brien (May)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual poetry workshop is a vehicle for critique\, a time of close reading and thoughtful responses that help craft the written word so that it says exactly what the author intends. The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us. Writing prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.

She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band\, and throughout the 70’s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach\, Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s\, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. \nBridgewater began self-producing with her 1993 album Keeping Tradition (Polydor/Verve)  and created DDB records in 2006 when she signed with the Universal Music Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her own CDs).   Releasing a series of critically-acclaimed CD’s\,all but one\, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald\, Dear Ella – have received Grammy nominations. Artist Theo Croker is signed to DDB Records and Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra also recorded a project with Dee Dee released by her label in 2014. \nBridgewater also pursued a parallel career in musical theater\, winning a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in The Wiz in 1975. Having recently completed a run as the lead role of Billie Holiday in the off-Broadway production of Lady Day\,  her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies\, Black Ballad\, Carmen\, Cabaret and the Off-Broadway and West End Productions ofLady Day\, for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. \nAs a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)\, Bridgewater continues to appeal for international solidarity to finance global grassroots projects in the fight against world hunger. She is currently on tour worldwide in support of “Memphis\,” her new CD\, and in April of this year was the recipient of an NEA Jazz Masters Fellows Award with honors bestowed at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C.
