Digital art created in the 2D Inkscape platform can be used on the web\, in print\, or to make a physical product like a sticker. Join us to create a two dimensional model of your own or one inspired by a media or literary source! Every student will be able to submit one 5” x 5” design for cutting on the library’s vinyl cutter. DESCRIPTION:Because we are part of nature and nature is a part of all of us\, in this workshop\, we'll explore ways that writing about nature is writing about ourselves. We consider what it means to be intentional in our consideration and exploration of the world around us. \nMichael Kleber-Diggs is a poet\, essayist\, and literary critic. His debut poetry collection\, Worldly Things (Milkweed Editions\, 2021)\, won the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize. Among other places\, Kleber-Diggs’ writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Poem-a-Day\, Poetry Daily\, Poetry Northwest\, Potomac Review\, Hunger Mountain\, Memorious\, and various anthologies. Since 2016\, Michael has been an instructor with the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop. He also teaches Creative Writing in Augsburg University’s low-res MFA program and at Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Available space is on a first-come\, first serve-basis -attendees may bring their own blankets or chairs or use seating available on the Common. Refreshments can be purchased on-site\, or attendees can bring their own. \nEnglish closed captioning available for the Deaf and hard of hearing. \n“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021) – PG-13; 150 minutes: \nPeter Parker is now unmasked\, his identity as Spider-Man known to the world. In a way\, he likes it that his girl MJ knows his true identity\, the same with his best friend Ned and Aunt May. However\, problems follow this reveal. Thus\, Peter approaches Doctor Strange to help him resolve the situation by performing a specific time-altering ritual. But that also bears some unintended and problematic consequences.

SUMMARY:Wood Turning: Turn a Bowl
DESCRIPTION:About this event \nSo you want to make a bowl out of wood? You've come to the right place. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you'll be able to:  \n\nIdentify the appropriate wood orientation to make a "face grain" bowl\nLearn how to mount a bowl blank to the lathe using a face plate\nTurn a tenon on the bowl blank and prepare it to be mounted in a scroll chuck\nShape the outside of the bowl\nShape the inside of the bowl \nRemove the tenon using a "Jamb" chuck and chisel\nUnderstand how you would go about finishing your bowl (Subject to time constraints).\n\nOverall this session will focus on using a bowl gouge and performing a "push" cut to perform nearly every cut on the bowl blank. You'll also learn how to avoid "catches" with the bowl gouge. And as time permits\, you'll learn how to recognize "tear out" and ways to address or avoid it to greatly reduce sanding time. \nIn this class: You'll mount the bowl blank\, turn the tenon\, turn the outside shape and do a first-pass sanding. You'll next flip your bowl around\, mount it in the scroll chuck\, carve the inside\, and give the inside a bit of sanding. Once you're done shaping the inside\, you'll learn how to remove the tenon with a "jamb" chuck and a chisel. \nRecommended equipment: Technocopia will provide you with a bowl blank\, a face shield and a sharp bowl gouge. However\, we recommend that you wear a shirt with short sleeves (no longer than your forearm). If you have a wood turning smock with a neck closure\, bring that along. (It keeps the wood chips out of your clothes). He first used a lathe when he was about 10 years old in his dad's wood shop. After a ~35 year break ( from wood turning :-)\, he took it up again in a big way and now produces about 100 bowls\, vases\, and hollow forms a year. He regularly sells his work at local craft events.  \nMark is a member of the American Association of Woodturners and The Central New England Woodturners. SUMMARY:Finding Sanctuary with Barry Van Dusen (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join Barry Van Dusen in this celebration of the rich biological diversity in Massachusetts and the Mass Audubon sanctuary system. In the last decade\, Barry has been Artist-in-Residence at several museums and botanic gardens around New England\, and most recently\, he finished a five year project visiting and painting at all of Mass Audubon’s sanctuaries throughout Massachusetts. This project resulted in a book\, FINDING SANCTUARY\, published in Spring 2020. In this illustrated talk\, Barry will share stories and paintings from his previous residencies\, with a focus on his latest and most ambitious residency project.  \nBarry W. Van Dusen\, residing in Massachusetts\, USA\, has illustrated many publications for the Massachusetts Audubon Society\, and his bird illustrations have appeared in books published by the American Birding Association\, HarperCollins\, Princeton University Press and Cornell University (Comstock). At the invitation of the Artists for Nature Foundation\, Barry has traveled to Spain\, England\, Ireland\, India\, Peru and Israel\, working alongside other wildlife artists to raise money for conservation of threatened habitats. Barry was elected a full member of Britain’s Society of Wildlife Artists in 1994\, and he contributes annually to their London exhibition. In 2014\, Barry was named Master Artist at the annual BIRDS IN ART show (Wausau\, Wisconsin) – an award which recognizes artists who have shown “outstanding achievement in using bird imagery in their artwork”. SUMMARY:FREE Organ Concert with Marshall & Shaylen Joos
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a complimentary lunchtime organ concert featuring Marshall & Shaylen Joos!\nPlease join us for an unusual and exciting combination of instruments: the mighty Hook organ with the beautiful orchestral harp. The organ’s 30 pedals blend with the harp’s seven pedals as played by sibling young artists Marshall (organ) and Shaylen (harp) Joos. The hall’s amazing acoustics will meld the glorious overtones of both instruments in a delightful array of compositions by Bach\, Salzedo\, Faure\, and Debussy. \nMarshall Joos\, organ\nMarshall Joos\, age 18\, is a rising sophomore Organ Performance major at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music studying under Ken Cowan. He began his organ studies at the age of ten under Lorrie Dodson with scholarships from the Young Organist Collaborative (YOC)\, a New Hampshire-based non-profit focused on investing in the next generation of organists. He is a two-time winner of the YOC’s Penn Brown Scholarship for Advanced Organ Studies. In Fall 2018\, Marshall began studying organ under Christian Lane of the Boston Organ Studio. Under Mr. Lane’s direction\, Marshall competed and won 1st place in the Boston Chapter of the Regional Competition for Young Organists in March of 2019\, went on to place 2nd at the Northeast Regional Convention in Buffalo\, NY in July\, and was also the 2019 1st place winner of the L. Cameron Johnson Scholarship Competition in Storrs\, CT. In 2021\, he was featured on NPR’s “From the Top” (Episode 396) and received the Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. He was the 2021 Boston Chapter winner of the Regional Competition for Young Organists and in May went on to receive 2nd place in the Northeast Regional Competition for Young Organists. He was the 2021 recipient of the Methuen Memorial Music Hall scholarship awarded to graduating seniors pursuing a music degree. Most recently\, Marshall was awarded the prestigious Pogorzelski-Yankee Memorial Scholarship by the American Guild of Organists. Marshall has enjoyed playing in concerts throughout New England\, most notably on the organ at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall (Methuen\, MA)\, the Kotzschmar organ at Merrill Auditorium (Portland\, ME)\, and on the Charles Fisk organ at the historic Old West Church (Boston\, MA). Marshall frequently plays organ and piano at Heritage Baptist Church in Dover\, NH. In his spare time\, he enjoys arranging sacred music\, spending time with his family\, and playing with his dog\, Sandy. \nShaylen Joos\, harp\nShaylen Joos\, age 18\, is a rising sophomore Harp Performance major at the New England Conservatory in Boston\, NH. She studies under Jessica Zhou of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She began her harp studies at the age of ten under Erica Driscoll. She was one of eight finalists in the 2018 international Young Artist’s Harp competition in Kenyon\, OH\, and placed in the American Harp Society’s (AHS) national competitions in 2019 and 2021. With scholarships from the AHS\, Shaylen has twice attended Curtis Institute of Music’s Summerfest Harp Colony and was able to study under internationally acclaimed harpists Elizabeth Hainen and Judy Loman. She has enjoyed working with the Nashua Chamber Orchestra\, the New Hampshire Philharmonic\, the Seacoast Wind Ensemble\, the Musical Youth of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra (MyPSO)\, the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra\, the North Shore Theatre\, and the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra. Shaylen was chosen to be featured on NPR’s radio show From the Top (episode 394) in January of 2021 and is a Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award recipient. Shaylen frequently plays at Heritage Baptist Church in Dover\, NH. Today\, the Hook organ is the oldest unaltered four-keyboard pipe organ in the Western Hemisphere located at its installation site. \nRestored in 1982\, the Hook Organ since then has become one of the most popular and respected organs in the United States.
