SUMMARY:Music Worcester Presents: Vijay Gupta\, Violinist in Recital
DESCRIPTION:“When the Violin\, the title of a poem by the Sufi mystic Hafiz on the power of forgiveness and new identities\, will present works by JS Bach and Reena Esmail in collaboration with dance artist and choreographer Yamini Kalluri. Opening with Bach’s 2nd Partita in D minor with its concluding “Ciacona” – considered an Everest for violinists – the program will present a new choreography of the preceding baroque dance movements of Bach’s Partita. Kalluri is trained as a classical Indian dancer as well as in the Martha Graham school of avant-garde ballet. \nFollowing the D minor Partita comes Esmail’s When The Violin\, originally written for choir and cello\, and a companion work to the 16th century Spanish composer Victoria’s O Vos Omnes. Esmail writes: “The text of O Vos Omnes is asking\, simply\, to be seen in a moment of sorrow — to be beheld through suffering and darkness. And Hafiz’s text responds in such a beautiful way — it moves through that darkness and begins to let those very first slivers of light in.” \nConcluding the program is Bach’s equally monumental 3rd Sonata in C major\, which is believed to have been written for the occasion of Pentecost. The Sonata’s 2nd movement\, a revolutionary 3- part fugue written for a four-stringed violin\, sets a Lutheran hymn “Komm\, Heiliger Geist” (Come\, Holy Spirit)\, and famously reverses the hymn subject in a feat of contrapuntal mastery.” \n  \n–Vijay Gupta\, Music Worcester Artist-In-Residence 2023

Please join us.  \nWriting prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop via a shared Google Document\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. The link to the Google Document can be found in the confirmation email when you register.  \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.

The Season 17 Runner-Up has since released a full album titled “Space & Time” charting at No. 1 on iTunes and has performed to sold out shows\, proving himself to be more than a fleeting success. Ricky is a versatile artist with powerful vocals and an electrifying stage presence that entertains crowds all over the country. The 18-member\, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics\, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland\, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone. Through performances\, community engagement and arts education\, the Company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all. \nMusic Worcester is thrilled to have joined six other arts presenters from across the United States as co-commissioners of Sounds of Hazel\, a brand new work by Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrating the life and legacy of jazz legend Hazel Scott. \nCurated with input from Scott’s son Adam Clayton Powell III and Scott biographer Karen Chilton\, The Hazel Scott Celebration is intended to introduce a new generation of music fans to this great American’s life and work and to help restore her rightful legacy as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. SUMMARY:Make a Reusable Shopping Bag
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to design and sew re-usable shopping/grocery bags and mesh produce bags. You will learn how to make bags in sizes that work for you so that you can have a ready stash of bags whenever you need them. We will also discuss some quick hacks to re-use materials to create useful bags quickly. \nAll materials and tools will be provided. Students with their own sewing machines are encouraged to bring their home machines. Students will take home 1 shopping bag and 1 mesh drawstring bag. \nBasic proficiency with a sewing machine is necessary for this class.

SUMMARY:Basics of Hand Sewing
DESCRIPTION:Learn and practice some basic hand stitches that you can use to stitch fabric together\, mend or even embellish and embroider. We will work on a small project using the stitches you learn. The pace of the class will depend on the experience level/ interest of the people attending. This class is intended to teach functional stitched but we may expand into some decorative stitches as time allows. \nFabric\, needles and an assortment of threads will be available for class use but feel free to bring in any fabrics and/or threads that you want to try using. \nProject Takeaway \nStudent will take home a set of needles\, stitched samples\, and a small project (if time allows).

DESCRIPTION: Boston-based world music vocal ensemble Halalisa Singers presents “Concert for the Earth\,” a performance honoring Earth Day\, featuring the “Missa Gaia (Earth Mass)\,” on Saturday\, April 29\, 8 pm\, at First Unitarian Church\, 90 Main Street\, Worcester\, and Sunday\, April 30\, 4 pm\, at First Parish of Arlington\, 630 Massachusetts Avenue\, Arlington. Special guests include composer\, singer\, and guitarist Jim Scott\, who joins the 30-voice choir as performer and soloist in his own works including “Missa Gaia” and “We Are the Earth\,” and acclaimed saxophonist/vocalist Stan Strickland. Led by Artistic Director Mary Cunningham\, the ensemble is also joined by pianist Trevor Berens\, percussionists Bertram Lehmann and Fabio Pirozzolo\, bassist Rick McLaughlin\, and local branch members of the national climate movement organization Mothers Out Front.
