DESCRIPTION:Join the renowned “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band for an evening of spirited selections\, ranging from classical to popular. \nFive years have passed since the scarlet coats of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band last appeared on stages in the Northeast of the United States. In the style of the band's 17th Director John Philip Sousa\, who initiated the concert tour tradition in 1891\, Marine Band Director Col. Jason K. Fettig has chosen a diverse mix of programs\, from traditional band repertoire and Sousa marches to instrumental solos and a salute to the Armed Forces. Free tickets are available (limit four per request) by clicking the "Register" tab on the upper right of this page. Seating is general admission and ticket holders must be seated by 7:15pm; remaining seats will be released to the standby line at that time.\n  \nEstablished in 1798 by an Act of Congress signed by President John Adams\, the United States Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. The band made its White House debut on New Year’s Day\, 1801\, and has performed at the inauguration of every President since Thomas Jefferson\, who is credited with giving the band the title\, “The President’s Own.” \nFrom the earliest days of our nation\, the Marine Band’s primary mission has been to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Dramatic re-enactments and audience participation make for a lively as well as informative tour along Worcesters' Main Street. Walk starts at Lincoln Square and finishes at City Hall. Approximately 1.5 hours.  Parking available in lot across from Worcester Auditorium.  \n  \nThis program is free\, but we do request that you please register so we get a headcount.  Thank you! \n  \n\nThe walking tour of Worcester’s Peace history\, put on by the Center for Nonviolent Solutions\, was a wonderful excursion into Worcester’s inspiring history of activism for peace\, and racial and gender equality. The lecturers and actors did a superb job in bringing to life the citizens of Worcester who fought for these great causes\, from colonial times to the modern day . .  . \n  \n\n\nThese dynamic and inspiring stories\, creatively told\, immersed us in Worcester's vital role in American history. We gained new insights and appreciation of our city and its people while walking down Main Street. \n\n  \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Arts Council\, a local agency\, which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency. \n

DESCRIPTION:This virtual poetry workshop is a vehicle for critique\, a time of close reading and thoughtful responses that help craft the written word so that it says exactly what the author intends. The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us. Writing prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.
