SUMMARY:Pathways to Publication with Sisters in Crime
DESCRIPTION:In this in-person panel\, authors\, Edith Maxwell and Janet Raye Stevens\, will discuss their different journeys to publication\, which include getting an agent and going with a large press to deciding to go with a small press or to self-publish. \n  \nAgatha Award winning Edith Maxwell writes the Quaker Midwife Mysteries and the Local Foods Mysteries. As Maddie Day she writes the Country Store Mysteries and the Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries. Her short crime fiction has appeared in many juried anthologies. She was honored to serve as President of Sisters in Crime New England and is a Lifetime member of Sisters in Crime National\, as well as a professional member of Mystery Writers of America. A fourth-generation Californian and former tech writer\, farmer\, and doula\, Maxwell now writes\, cooks\, gardens\, and wastes time as a Facebook addict north of Boston. \nJanet Raye Stevens writes short stories and novel-length mystery\, YA\, and romance. Winner of RWA's 2018 Golden Heart Award\, Janet lives in Massachusetts where she indulges her hobbies of drinking copious amounts of tea (Earl Gray\, hot) plotting revenge (best served cold)\, and creating fictional worlds populated with cool chicks and hot guys. Janet describes her path to publication as a long\, circuitous one\, which gives her plenty of stories to tell. These include looking for a traditional publisher\, entering many writing contests (and winning some awards) with agents/editors as the final judge\, getting and switching agents\, and other twists and turns until finally she went indie and published four books as well as a number of short stories. She grew up in Worcester and also worked at the WPL film library back in the 1980s.

SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Writing Workshop with Susan Roney-O'Brien (April)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual poetry workshop is a vehicle for critique\, a time of close reading and thoughtful responses that help craft the written word so that it says exactly what the author intends. The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us.  \nWriting prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop via a shared Google Document\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. The link to the Google Document can be found in the confirmation email when you register.  \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.

SUMMARY:Women’s History Month Celebration of Frances Perkins (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual presentation by speakers from the Frances Perkins Center on the life and legacy of Frances Perkins.  \nThe Worcester Public Library also invites the public to visit the Frances Perkins Branch during the month of March 2023 to see the traveling exhibit about the Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins. Perkins was the driving force behind many of the groundbreaking New Deal programs that are still the foundation of the American social safety net — Social Security\, unemployment insurance\, the 40-hour work week\, and the minimum wage. \nThe display of the traveling exhibit is made possible due to the support of the Maine Community Foundation\, Maine Humanities Council\, Historic New England\, Katharine J. Watson\, and Newman’s Own Foundation.

SUMMARY:Turning Memories Into Transformational Stories with Leslie-Ann Murray (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual workshop will teach emerging writers how to turn their memories into transformational stories whether they want to write privately or to be published. Personal Stories Matter because you can use your voice to harness social\, political\, and cultural change\, not only for a just society but an equitable society where we all have a seat at the table.  \nWorkshop Structure: This short class will focus on setting\, scene\, plot structure\, and narrative voice. You will begin the class by reading short excerpts of published letters\, and then you will learn how to apply storytelling techniques to nonfiction letter writing. During the session\, you will be given various writing prompts. You will learn the basics of the drafting process \n2. You will learn the importance of journaling to enhance your writing practice \n3. You will learn straightforward\, practical craft lessons and writing prompts \n4. You will feel empowered to tell your own life story and gain the confidence to write your own stories. \nLeslie-Ann Murray is a fiction writer from Trinidad & Tobago. She created Brown Girl Book Lover where she interviews diverse writers and reviews books that should be at the forefront of our imagination. SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Writing Workshop with Susan Roney-O'Brien (March)
