SUMMARY:Music Worcester Presents: Vijay Gupta\, Violinist in Recital
DESCRIPTION:“When the Violin\, the title of a poem by the Sufi mystic Hafiz on the power of forgiveness and new identities\, will present works by JS Bach and Reena Esmail in collaboration with dance artist and choreographer Yamini Kalluri. Opening with Bach’s 2nd Partita in D minor with its concluding “Ciacona” – considered an Everest for violinists – the program will present a new choreography of the preceding baroque dance movements of Bach’s Partita. Kalluri is trained as a classical Indian dancer as well as in the Martha Graham school of avant-garde ballet. \nFollowing the D minor Partita comes Esmail’s When The Violin\, originally written for choir and cello\, and a companion work to the 16th century Spanish composer Victoria’s O Vos Omnes. Esmail writes: “The text of O Vos Omnes is asking\, simply\, to be seen in a moment of sorrow — to be beheld through suffering and darkness. And Hafiz’s text responds in such a beautiful way — it moves through that darkness and begins to let those very first slivers of light in.” \nConcluding the program is Bach’s equally monumental 3rd Sonata in C major\, which is believed to have been written for the occasion of Pentecost. The Sonata’s 2nd movement\, a revolutionary 3- part fugue written for a four-stringed violin\, sets a Lutheran hymn “Komm\, Heiliger Geist” (Come\, Holy Spirit)\, and famously reverses the hymn subject in a feat of contrapuntal mastery.” \n  \n–Vijay Gupta\, Music Worcester Artist-In-Residence 2023

The 18-member\, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics\, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland\, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone. Through performances\, community engagement and arts education\, the Company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all. \nMusic Worcester is thrilled to have joined six other arts presenters from across the United States as co-commissioners of Sounds of Hazel\, a brand new work by Dance Theatre of Harlem celebrating the life and legacy of jazz legend Hazel Scott. \nCurated with input from Scott’s son Adam Clayton Powell III and Scott biographer Karen Chilton\, The Hazel Scott Celebration is intended to introduce a new generation of music fans to this great American’s life and work and to help restore her rightful legacy as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. Whether your first time seeing The Nutcracker\, or your fortieth\, don’t miss this Christmas tradition at Mechanics Hall! \nYoung audience members will be invited to meet a special Nutcracker character after each performance. \n  \nDance Prism\, founded in 1982 by Scott Ranagan and Mary Demaso\, is a classically focused ensemble\, whose mission is to bring the spectrum of ballet into the communities of New England in an accessible form. Its touring schedule regularly includes appearances in such venues as Worcester’s Mechanics Hall\, the Collins Center in Andover\, and the Jackson Arts Center at Bristol Community College in Fall River. The company also provides performances\, lecture demonstrations\, and workshops for a number of private and public schools and retirement communities throughout the region. \nDance Prism is composed of approximately 30 professional dancers and apprentices\, supplemented for larger productions such as The Nutcracker by serious ballet students who audition annually for the company. Dance Prism’s casts include dancers based throughout the northeast region and eastern and western seaboard.

Whether your first time seeing The Nutcracker\, or your fortieth\, don’t miss this Christmas tradition at Mechanics Hall! \nYoung audience members will be invited to meet a special Nutcracker character after each performance. \n  \nDance Prism\, founded in 1982 by Scott Ranagan and Mary Demaso\, is a classically focused ensemble\, whose mission is to bring the spectrum of ballet into the communities of New England in an accessible form. Its touring schedule regularly includes appearances in such venues as Worcester’s Mechanics Hall\, the Collins Center in Andover\, and the Jackson Arts Center at Bristol Community College in Fall River. The company also provides performances\, lecture demonstrations\, and workshops for a number of private and public schools and retirement communities throughout the region. \nDance Prism is composed of approximately 30 professional dancers and apprentices\, supplemented for larger productions such as The Nutcracker by serious ballet students who audition annually for the company. Dance Prism’s casts include dancers based throughout the northeast region and eastern and western seaboard.

DESCRIPTION:The Travelin’ McCourys do not stand still. They are on the road—and online—entertaining audiences with live shows that include some of the best musicians and singers from all genres. It’s always different\, always exciting\, and always great music. \nNo other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury\, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work—a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass music to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram\, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful. But the band is now combining their sound with others to make something fresh and rejuvenating. \nThey recently played with the Allman Brothers at Wanee Fest and then brought the house down at Warren Haynes’ Annual Christmas Jam\, an invitation only Southern Rock homecoming.  Their jam with the Lee Boys was hailed by many as the highlight of the evening\, and once word of the live video hit the streets\, sent new fans online to watch a supercharged combination of sacred steel\, R&B\, and bluegrass. They’ve also performed with Warren Haynes\, Phish\, and have a tour scheduled with the aforementioned Lee Boys. Ronnie McCoury described it as “peanut butter and jelly.” It was just right. \nThey can push forward so far because their roots are so deep. The band has a confidence that only comes with having paid their dues with twenty years on the bluegrass road. Other groups and new fans hear this immediately—the tight rhythm\, the soulful material\, and the confidence in taking bluegrass from the safety of the shore into uncharted waters. \nRonnie says\, “We like to go in and play traditional bluegrass music the way we do it with Dad\, but we also like to be able to step into situations where we can really stretch out. If we need to plug in\, we’ll plug in. We’re open to anything.” \nIt’s that attitude\, backed up by talent\, that marks great musicians\, traditional or progressive. The Travelin’ McCourys are twenty-first century musical pilgrims and adventurers. They’re onto something new\, just like Bill Monroe was in the 1940s\, but now we can see and hear that adventure live or online. Go see them\, or—if you hold still long enough—they’ll come to you.

DESCRIPTION:The Ensemble is named after the Silesia region (‘Śląsk’ in Polish)\, and the name of its founder to commemorate his undeniable contribution to the greatness of ‘ŚLASK’ and acclaimed position it has earned over the years. For decades\, the Ensemble strove for perfection and mastery. \nToday\, it is a cultural institution with great executive capabilities\, performing around 120 concerts a year. \nThe quintessence of the Ensemble’s artistic activity is the gala concerts performed by the group which are characterised by the liveliness\, expression and professionalism of the Ensemble’s artistic composition\, featuring over 100 performers in the choir\, ballet and orchestra. \nThe dynamic nature of gala concerts and their colourful stage costumes create a spectacle that takes the audience on a journey to the world of picturesque folk culture. \nTickets are $39\, $45 and $58 depending on seat location.
