SUMMARY:Turning Memories Into Transformational Stories with Leslie-Ann Murray (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual workshop will teach emerging writers how to turn their memories into transformational stories whether they want to write privately or to be published. Personal Stories Matter because you can use your voice to harness social\, political\, and cultural change\, not only for a just society but an equitable society where we all have a seat at the table.  \nWorkshop Structure: This short class will focus on setting\, scene\, plot structure\, and narrative voice. You will begin the class by reading short excerpts of published letters\, and then you will learn how to apply storytelling techniques to nonfiction letter writing. During the session\, you will be given various writing prompts. The writing prompts are not your ordinary; they are structured as a nonfiction essay arc\, and this method helps you get “unstuck.” At the end of our writing session\, you will have an outline of your first nonfiction essay or letter that you can turn into a publishable article.  \nWorkshop Takeaways: \n1. You will learn the basics of the drafting process \n2. You will learn the importance of journaling to enhance your writing practice \n3. You will learn straightforward\, practical craft lessons and writing prompts \n4. You will feel empowered to tell your own life story and gain the confidence to write your own stories. \nLeslie-Ann Murray is a fiction writer from Trinidad & Tobago. She created Brown Girl Book Lover where she interviews diverse writers and reviews books that should be at the forefront of our imagination. She is currently working on her first novel\, This Has Made Us Beautiful. Leslie-Ann has been published in Poets & Writers\, Zone3\, Ploughshares\, and Salamander Literary Magazine. SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Writing Workshop with Susan Roney-O'Brien (March)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual poetry workshop is a vehicle for critique\, a time of close reading and thoughtful responses that help craft the written word so that it says exactly what the author intends. The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us.  \nWriting prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop via a shared Google Document\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. The link to the Google Document can be found in the confirmation email when you register.  \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Impact
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception for Impact: A Members' Exhibition in collaboration with the Fitchburg Art Museum \nFriday\, March 3\, 2023\, 6:00-9:00 PM \nArtsWorcester Main Galleries \nCome by and celebrate the artists of Impact! \nThe natural world has always inspired artists with its beauty\, power\, and the raw materials it offers for artmaking. Today\, in the face of our climate crisis\, many artists bear witness to and represent environmental changes in their work–even as others draw from the beautiful ways humans have shaped and utilized the earth. For this eleventh annual “call and response” exhibition\, artist members are asked to consider humanity’s complex relationship with our environment through artworks on loan from the Fitchburg Art Museum. \nFree and open to the public. \nOn view February 25 through April 8\, 2023.  \nGallery hours run Thursdays through Sundays\, 12-5pm. \nParking is available at the Worcester Public Library (McGrath) Lot\, Federal Plaza Garage\, Worcester Common Garage\, and Pearl-Elm Garage. Metered street parking is also available. Please do not park in the lot across the street from the Printers Building; you will be immediately towed. \nWe thank our friends and partners at the Fitchburg Art Museum for sharing their collection so generously with our artists.
