SUMMARY:Opening Reception of Saffron Notes: Paintings of South Asian Women. A Solo Exhibition by Piya Samant
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the opening reception of Saffron Notes. An exhibition featuring featuring oil paintings of South Asian women by visual artist Piya Samant. There will be refreshments\, and a cash bar. This event is free and open to the public. This project is funded by a Worcester Arts Council and Mass Cultural Council grant. #wacfunded \nExhibition runs : December 7 – 21\, 2022. \nThe 'Saffron Notes' Story \nFor centuries\, western artists have celebrated women by portraying them as beautiful\, powerful\, and sometimes as nobility. Few parallels exist for South Asian women because we often think of them as playing their assigned roles in society. They have been captured as doting mothers\, loyal wives\, goddesses in temples\, and homemakers performing chores. Seldom does the art world see them as a muse and capture their beauty for who they are\, independent of their role in society. \nThis collection attempts to portray South Asian women in their ephemeral moments of solitude\, beauty\, and thoughts of self-worth\, free from societal burdens. — Piya Samant \nLet’s Connect: Instagram: @art.by.piyali\nFacebook: @artbypiyali | TikTok: @piyasamant | Website: https://www.artbypiyali.com/ \nArtist Bio: Born and raised in India\, Piya Samant now lives and paints in the awe-inspiring New England region\, USA. After pursuing a career in Technology\, she picked up the brush again in 2014 and commenced her full-time art practice.  Piya’s paintings are characterized by colorful\, light-filled canvases in a painterly style. Her work is exhibited in museums and galleries across USA. As a self-taught artist\, Piya has learned art techniques by observing artworks of Master artists. She is represented by PXPContemporary and ArtsPlus galleries. \nIn 2022\, Piya received a WCC/ Mass Cultural State grant to further her painting endeavors. \nArtist Statement: 'Beauty is fleeting and my desire to capture the beauty of life (be it human\, flora or fauna) is irresistable. I connect with people's body language more than their words. Through painting I attempt to immortalize the beauty of my subjects in their entirety; not just their face and body but also their character. Floral stilllifes are a delight to paint because I am able to project emotions onto unsuspecting flowers through the play of light and strategically placed brushstrokes.'

SUMMARY:Boston Gay Men's Chorus presents Joyful & Triumphant & Gay!
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the season with the joyous and triumphant sounds of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus as they perform traditional favorites and modern classics. \nThe Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982\, the voice ensemble of some 200 voices is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship\, creative programming\, groundbreaking community outreach\, and an innovative educational program. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds III\, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive\, affirming image of the LGBTQ+ community. The Chorus is heard live by thousands of people each season and millions more through recording\, television and internet broadcasts. CBS-WBZ named the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. The Boston Business Journal has named BGMC one of the top 10 performing arts organizations in the city each year since 2018. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being the first LGBTQ+ chorus to perform in Poland in 2005\, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018. \nThe Chorus’ performance of Joyful & Triumphant & Gay at Mechanics Hall on December 4 is its first in-person holiday show since 2019.

SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Writing Workshop with Susan Roney-O’Brien (December)
DESCRIPTION:This virtual poetry workshop is a vehicle for critique\, a time of close reading and thoughtful responses that help craft the written word so that it says exactly what the author intends. The focus is the work itself. Poets are respectful of each other\, value the craft\, understand the courage it takes to have work critiqued\, and make the final decisions about their own writing. Please join us. Writing prompts will be shared with registrants one week before the workshop\, and we request you submit your work at least three days before the workshop to give attendees time to read your poem. \nSusan Roney-O’Brien earned her MFA at Warren Wilson College and is the author of five poetry collections. She hosts monthly poetry readings\, teaches workshops and coordinates the Stanley Kunitz summer writing series.
