SUMMARY:Wood Turning: Turn a Bowl
DESCRIPTION:About this event \nSo you want to make a bowl out of wood? You've come to the right place. \nBy the end of this workshop\, you'll be able to:  \n\nIdentify the appropriate wood orientation to make a "face grain" bowl\nLearn how to mount a bowl blank to the lathe using a face plate\nTurn a tenon on the bowl blank and prepare it to be mounted in a scroll chuck\nShape the outside of the bowl\nShape the inside of the bowl \nRemove the tenon using a "Jamb" chuck and chisel\nUnderstand how you would go about finishing your bowl (Subject to time constraints).\n\nOverall this session will focus on using a bowl gouge and performing a "push" cut to perform nearly every cut on the bowl blank. You'll also learn how to avoid "catches" with the bowl gouge. And as time permits\, you'll learn how to recognize "tear out" and ways to address or avoid it to greatly reduce sanding time. \nIn this class: You'll mount the bowl blank\, turn the tenon\, turn the outside shape and do a first-pass sanding. You'll next flip your bowl around\, mount it in the scroll chuck\, carve the inside\, and give the inside a bit of sanding. Once you're done shaping the inside\, you'll learn how to remove the tenon with a "jamb" chuck and a chisel. \nRecommended equipment: Technocopia will provide you with a bowl blank\, a face shield and a sharp bowl gouge. However\, we recommend that you wear a shirt with short sleeves (no longer than your forearm). If you have a wood turning smock with a neck closure\, bring that along. (It keeps the wood chips out of your clothes). And\, due to COVID\, Technocopia requires masks at all times.  \nAdditional Information \n\nPlease visit https://technocopia.org/directions for more information about getting to and parking around Technocopia.\nFor this course\, students are required to have already successfully completed Wood Turning 1 at Technocopia or received equivalent certification.\nIf you already have wood turning experience\, Email pictures of some of your more recent projects to mark.durrenberger@technocopia.org and you might be able skip Woodturning 1.\nSuccessful completion of this course will result in certification of Technocopia members to free use of the tools directly covered in the course. Non-members who complete this course will be eligible to participate in future project-based classes which require these tools.\n\nAbout This Instructor \nMark Durrenberger is a lifelong woodworker. He first used a lathe when he was about 10 years old in his dad's wood shop. After a ~35 year break ( from wood turning :-)\, he took it up again in a big way and now produces about 100 bowls\, vases\, and hollow forms a year. He regularly sells his work at local craft events.  \nMark is a member of the American Association of Woodturners and The Central New England Woodturners. You can see his work on his instagram page https://www.instagram.com/durrenberger_wood_art/?hl=en. In his non-wood turning time\, Mark is the President and Founder of New England Clean Energy. A Hudson\, MA based solar and solar-charged battery installation company. In that capacity\, Mark sells solar and battery systems. He also regularly teaches builders about solar systems and Net Zero homes through the Home Builders of Western MA and the Home Builders of Central MA.

SUMMARY:Call for Artists
DESCRIPTION:This is a FREE & OPEN call for artists! Submit your work by August 24th at 8pm to be included in the Bouncy House Time Machine exhibit at the Worcester PopUp. Submissions will be accepted until August 31st at 2pm\, but will be subject to exhibit availability. \nPlease click here to learn more and submit your art! \n  \nSeptember 14th to October 6th\nOpening reception: Thurs Sept 15th 6-10pm\nWorcester PopUp | 20 Franklin St\, Worcester\, MA 01608 \nThe exhibit is free to view at the Worcester PopUp for its entire duration. Artists and the public are invited to the free opening reception\, where there will be sweets\, a cash bar\, games\, music\, and of course — a BOUNCY HOUSE!  \nBHTM is friendly to all ages but targets the experiences of adults 18+. Any and all people wanting to share childlike happiness with each other are encouraged and welcome. \nSo much of what our community has experienced over the past few years has left adults with a need to grieve\, be angry\, be scared\, and grow up in ways we never expected. It has also left us with a need to find joy in silly accidents\, laugh like kids do\, and view some days through the eyes of a child. \nIn this exhibit\, artists are encouraged and even challenged to think and create like kids again. We will transform the PopUp into a happy place for one’s inner child\, and encourage adults to let their worries go while in that space. I hope that our community can have a brief respite from “adulting” in this era when they experience Bouncy House Time Machine.\n\nWhether you think of finding bugs and cool rocks on a walk\, the smell of sunscreen at summer camp\, or silly playground scrapes\, your memories and your joy are welcome. Allow yourself to view life and art with cheer\, innocence\, and wide-eyed curiosity. This exhibit is open to anyone wanting to feel like a kid again\, through art of their own and as admirers of others’.

SUMMARY:Healing Fibers: DE.MOC.RA.CY-A Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:What is democracy to you? \nthis is a call to artists to express themselves. \nWe are losing our right to rule ourselves by ourselves. We as artists hold a mirror to our society to reflect its reality. What is that reality to you in the current political climate? \nOur fight to include all people to have a right to vote\, to be afforded basic human rights\, and to ensure equality and welfare for all\, continues to be a long ongoing effort. We invite artists of all types to create art with an element of fiber addressing our current struggle. Why fiber? Because our stories are somehow interwoven. \n  \nExhibit runs from 1st-12th of June 12PM-4PM  \nArtists' Reception on 5th of June 2PM- 5PM

SUMMARY:Artists' Roundtable: Approaching Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Gallery representation is a goal for many artists\, but one clouded by mystery and intimidation. Three experienced gallerists familiar with ArtsWorcester will break down the benefits of gallery representation\, how to identify the right galleries for your work\, and what you need to approach them. This is an open discussion about galleries; it is not a portfolio review. \nWe will hear from: \nArlette Kayafas\, Gallery Kayafas\, Boston\, MA \nKate Rasche\, George Marshall Store Gallery\, York\, ME \nTamar Russell Brown\, Gallery Sitka\, Shirley\, MA \nand leave lots of time for your questions. Then we’ll adjourn to the galleries for refreshments and more conversation. \n  \nArlette Kayafas is the founder and owner of Gallery Kayafas\, operating in Boston’s South End since 2003. The gallery is known for exhibiting work by renowned photographers\, often pairing them with emerging artists. Arlette and her husband\, Gus\, have been collecting photography for more than five decades. In 2012\, Gallery Kayafas expanded its programming to include contemporary painting\, installation\, works on paper\, sculpture\, and new media. Arlette is drawn to artists with a strong voice that is articulated through their work. \nKate Rasche is the director of the George Marshall Store Gallery in York\, Maine\, and a working artist. Over the last decade she has led and been involved in a wide range of curatorial and administrative projects\, including most recently as assistant director at ArtsWorcester. Her work as a gallerist is informed by a desire to support the careers of emerging and mid-career artists. Her work in the studio grapples with explorations and understandings of place. Rasche earned a degree in studio art from Skidmore College and holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University. She lives in southern Maine with her husband and two children. \nA Tennessee native with Hungarian roots\, Tamar Russell Brown’s background is in print design.
