SUMMARY:Healing Fibers: DE.MOC.RA.CY-A Call to Action
DESCRIPTION:What is democracy to you? \nthis is a call to artists to express themselves. \nWe are losing our right to rule ourselves by ourselves. We as artists hold a mirror to our society to reflect its reality. What is that reality to you in the current political climate? \nOur fight to include all people to have a right to vote\, to be afforded basic human rights\, and to ensure equality and welfare for all\, continues to be a long ongoing effort. We invite artists of all types to create art with an element of fiber addressing our current struggle. Why fiber? Because our stories are somehow interwoven. \n  \nExhibit runs from 1st-12th of June 12PM-4PM  \nArtists' Reception on 5th of June 2PM- 5PM

SUMMARY:Artists' Roundtable: Approaching Galleries
DESCRIPTION:Gallery representation is a goal for many artists\, but one clouded by mystery and intimidation. Three experienced gallerists familiar with ArtsWorcester will break down the benefits of gallery representation\, how to identify the right galleries for your work\, and what you need to approach them. This is an open discussion about galleries; it is not a portfolio review. \nWe will hear from: \nArlette Kayafas\, Gallery Kayafas\, Boston\, MA \nKate Rasche\, George Marshall Store Gallery\, York\, ME \nTamar Russell Brown\, Gallery Sitka\, Shirley\, MA \nand leave lots of time for your questions. Then we’ll adjourn to the galleries for refreshments and more conversation. \n  \nArlette Kayafas is the founder and owner of Gallery Kayafas\, operating in Boston’s South End since 2003. The gallery is known for exhibiting work by renowned photographers\, often pairing them with emerging artists. Arlette and her husband\, Gus\, have been collecting photography for more than five decades. In 2012\, Gallery Kayafas expanded its programming to include contemporary painting\, installation\, works on paper\, sculpture\, and new media. Arlette is drawn to artists with a strong voice that is articulated through their work. \nKate Rasche is the director of the George Marshall Store Gallery in York\, Maine\, and a working artist. Over the last decade she has led and been involved in a wide range of curatorial and administrative projects\, including most recently as assistant director at ArtsWorcester. Her work as a gallerist is informed by a desire to support the careers of emerging and mid-career artists. Her work in the studio grapples with explorations and understandings of place. Rasche earned a degree in studio art from Skidmore College and holds an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University. She lives in southern Maine with her husband and two children. \nA Tennessee native with Hungarian roots\, Tamar Russell Brown’s background is in print design. Mrs. Russell Brown has a certificate in photography from Cumberland University in Tennessee\, an associate degree in visual communication from Nashville State Technical Institute\, a BA in design from Rhode Island College (where she currently serves on the Alumni Board) and a year abroad at Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem in Budapest\, Hungary. Mrs. Russell Brown operates the home studio for Sitka Creations® LLC in Central Massachusetts. She started Gallery Sitka in 2014. She is currently the Chair of the Fitchburg Cultural Alliance and serves on several local boards. \n  \nThis event will take place in person at 44 Portland Street\, Worcester\, MA. Tea and cookies to follow. Proof of vaccination is required for this event\, and masks must be worn during the panel conversation. (Masks are optional when we gather for tea and cookies in the galleries afterwards.) \nThis event is free to current ArtsWorcester members. \nClick here to join\, or renew your ArtsWorcester membership. Please contact the gallery if you are unsure of your member status: info@artsworcester.org or 508-755-5142. \n  \nWe thank the Melvin S. Cutler Charitable Foundation for for their support of artists' professional development. \n  \n///// Image: Who What Where (2021) installation view\, courtesy of the George Marshall Store Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Public gallery hours for Jason Fiering: Turned Down \nFree \nAbout this exhibition: \nThese precise\, minimalist assemblies offer multiple interpretations of the bed\, a site associated with rest\, refuge\, intimacy\, illness\, and violence alike. Fiering reflects the ambiguities of that site in the constructions themselves. The motif of a single fold\, the “turn down\,” bends the picture plane and emphasizes the ambiguities of front and back\, image and object\, and painting and sculpture. Fiering’s meticulous construction\, uncompromising hard edges\, and mathematical proportions invite us to consider a familiar form anew\, and challenge our desires for security and certainty. \nIn 2021\, Jason Fiering was named ArtsWorcester’s Present Tense Prize Winner. This prize recognizes an artist whose work exemplifies new practices\, artistic risk-taking\, and excellence in execution. Prize winners are rewarded with a solo exhibition and a $1\,000 honorarium. \n  \nThe Present Tense Prize is generously supported by Marlene and David Persky and the Artist Prize Fund. \nArtsWorcester exhibits in the Davis Art Gallery take place courtesy of Davis Publications. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nJason Fiering is a painter working in Boston and New Bedford\, Massachusetts. His artwork encompasses themes of visual perception and introspection. Among his career highlights are a commission for the city of Graz\, Austria\, solo shows at Artspace New Haven\, the Chazan Gallery in Providence\, and the Solo Show Award from Boston’s Bromfield Gallery.  He has been an artist in residence at Ox-Bow in Michigan\, I-Park in Connecticut\, and Arts Letters and Numbers in New York. SUMMARY:Material Matters - Public Gallery Hours
DESCRIPTION:Public gallery hours for Material Matters: A Members Exhibition in partnership with the Fitchburg Art Museum \nFree \nAbout this exhibition: \nFor the last decade\, ArtsWorcester and the Fitchburg Art Museum (FAM) have partnered on an annual “Call and Response” exhibition\, an idea drawn from democratic and musical traditions in African and African Diaspora cultures. FAM begins with the call: a loan of ten artworks from their permanent collection\, all on a single theme. The first "Call and Response" loan featured ten pieces from FAM’s extensive African collection\, which was\, at the time\, primarily traditional crafts and ritual objects. Ten years later\, FAM now holds a rich array of contemporary African and Diasporic artists. The 2022 loan features a range of subject matter and media\, reflecting the capacity and diversity of different materials within African art. \nArtsWorcester artist members were invited to respond to one or more of these pieces for Material Matters\, and examine the role materiality plays in their creations. The resulting exhibition features work by seventy-six artists\, whose works encompass new media\, traditional forms\, and fine craft. FAM's curatorial staff will select ten works from Material Matters to be exhibited at the Museum alongside the 2022 loan. Selections will be announced in person at the reception and electronically\, and will go on view at the Fitchburg Art Museum later this year. To date\, seventy-seven individual artists have received this honor. \nTen percent of art sales from Material Matters will be donated to African Community Education (ACE). These funds and any direct donations made to ACE as part of this exhibition will be directed to the ACE Post-Secondary Success Fund. The Post-Secondary Success Fund provides direct financial support to ACE students graduating high school each year. Funds will be evenly and directly distributed to each graduate who will work with ACE’s Post-Secondary Success Liaison to use the funds in a way that best helps them achieve success upon graduation. \n  \nBeginning Saturday\, March 19\, 2022: For those with proof of vaccination\, masks are encouraged and appreciated. For those without proof of vaccination\, masks remain mandatory. These policies are subject to change\, based on current public health data and metrics. \nParking is available at the Worcester Public Library (McGrath) Lot\, Federal Plaza Garage\, Worcester Common Garage\, and Pearl-Elm Garage. Metered street parking is also available.

SUMMARY:Master Series lecture: "Us Them We | Race Ethnicity Identity"
DESCRIPTION:The Worcester Art Museum's current exhibition\, Us Them We | Race Ethnicity Identity\, considers the ways that artists from the last forty years accentuate concepts like race and ethnicity through four formal devices: Text\, Juxtaposition\, Seriality and Pattern. Artists often employ one or more of these approaches as a means of storytelling\, protest and celebration. \nIn this special Master Series lecture\, Kimberly Juanita Brown\, a specialist in visual culture studies\, will address selected works in the exhibition and will share her thoughts on the stories they tell. After the lecture\, Brown will be joined in the galleries by co-curator Nancy Burns for a tour of the exhibition. \nThis Master Series event will be held on-site in WAM's conference room\, with an option to view virtually via Zoom. Attendance is free for WAM Members\, and $5 for non-members. To sign up for on-site or virtual tickets\, please visit www.worcesterart.org/events/master-series/#upcoming. \nSpeaker: Kimberly Juanita Brown\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing\, Dartmouth College. \n  \nPhoto: Rania Matar\, Sisters\, Beirut\, 2007\, archival inkjet print. © Rania Matar.
