SUMMARY:Opening Reception: "In Plain Sight" artworks by Scarlett Hoey & "Redemption" artworks by Jennifer Davis Carey
DESCRIPTION:Art and history give us an opportunity to encounter the past and grapple with historic injustices. In this two-person exhibit\, artworks by Jennifer Davis Carey (Redemption) and Scarlett Hoey (In Plain Sight) focus on people who were enslaved within and outside of the Worcester area. As we reflect on Worcester’s recent 300th anniversary\, Tercentenary 2022\, how can we think critically about past local and global injustices to advocate for a more just future? \n  \nRedemption is a series of portraits in enamel that re-vision and re-interpret daguerreotypes of people held in bondage on agricultural plantations in Columbia\, South Carolina. The original daguerreotypes reclaimed in this exhibition were commissioned in 1850 by Louis Agassiz\, a professor at Harvard. \n  \nIn Plain Sight shows the complicity of Worcester County to the transatlantic slave trade through photographs of gravestones and sites\, with research linked on The Northeast Slavery Records Index (NESRI (https://nesri.commons.gc.cuny.edu/massachusetts/)). \n  \nThe exhibit is on view June 28 – July 9. The Worcester PopUp at the JMAC gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday from 12pm – 4pm. \n\nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Arts Council\, which was made possible with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funding from the City of Worcester. The Worcester Arts Council is a local agency\, which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.  \nThe Worcester PopUp at the JMAC is a free-to-use\, creative co-working space of the Worcester Cultural Coalition and in partnership with The Barr Foundation. This event does not necessarily reflect the views of either organization. \n#WACFunded #PowerOfCulture

SUMMARY:Rocky Horror Picture Show with Shadowcasting by Teseracte Players
DESCRIPTION:I would like\, if I may\, to take you on a strange journey. \nEver wonder what has kept crowds coming to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show for almost 50 years? Shadowcasting. Born out of audience participation\, those attending in costume would get out of their seats and act out parts of the film in front of the movie screen. This organic expression of the film’s central theme (Don’t dream it\, be it) evolved into full casts of actors performing along with the cult classic and interacting with audiences to create a unique experience with each viewing. Over time\, the art of shadowcasting has grown\, bringing this unparalleled style of entertainment to audiences world wide. Today\, while the Rocky Horror Picture Show is still the most shadowcasted film\, others (such as Grease\, Repo! The Genetic Opera\, The Princess Bride\, and many more) have made their way into theaters to the delight of audiences. \nReady to see and experience a show? Come see the Teseracte Players of Boston performing their twist on this rite of passage that is sure to thrill\, chill\, and fulfill you! \nGeneral admission seating. Tickets are $25. $5 discount available for students and seniors.

SUMMARY:"A Walk in the Woo" - Worcester's 2022 Rain Poets Read
DESCRIPTION:The Worcester County Poetry Association is pleased to organize this reading of Worcester's 2022 Rain Poets. For two years now\, the WCPA has selected the poems of thirteen different Worcester-area poets to paint around the city using hydrophobic paint – that's right\, these poems only show up when the concrete around them is wet\, hence the Rain Poets. These poems will come to speak this April 23\, given voice by their poets. We hope you'll join us and consider submitting a poem for this year's project! \nThe Worcester PopUp at the JMAC is a free-to-use\, creative co-working space of the Worcester Cultural Coalition and in partnership with The Barr Foundation. This event does not necessarily reflect the views of either organization.

SUMMARY:The Seagull presented by THTC Youth Acting Company
DESCRIPTION:February 24th 2023\, 7:00 pm\nFebruary 25th 2023\, 7:00 pm\nFebruary 26th 2023\, 2:00 pm \n  \nExperience Livy Scanlon’s 75-minute adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull\, presented by The Hanover Theatre Conservatory’s Youth Acting Company (YAC). In a letter dated 1895\, Anton Chekhov wrote\, “Believe it or not\, my friend\, I’m writing a play! It’s a comedy: three female roles\, six male\, four acts\, a great deal of conversation about literature\, very little action and ten tons of love.” The result of his efforts was The Seagull\, a slice-of-life portrait set on a modest estate in the Russian countryside at the turn of the century. The story focuses on the romantic and artistic conflicts between the young poet Constantine\, the ingenue Nina\, the fading actress Arkadina and the middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin. Ultimately\, each of Chekhov’s motley cast of characters seeks fulfillment and\, in doing so\, delivers a humorous albeit bittersweet satire\, poking fun at human folly. \nThese performances will be held in The Brickbox Theater at 20 Franklin Street\, Worcester. \nTickets are $20. Seating is general admission. Please contact the box office at 877.571.SHOW (7469) for more information.
